Today we have a smartphone review – the OPPO A72. It’s a slightly better spec than the previously reviewed OPPO A9. Let’s take a look at the Design, technical aspects and performance of the OPPO A72 – a sturdy and good value mid-range smartphone.

Design

The Oppo A72 comes with 6.5 inches display and a screen-to-body ratio of ~83%, which is similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10e. It is a Full HD 1080p IPS LCD touchscreen. The display aspect ratio is 20:9. The screen also has a pixel density of 405, which should give you a sharper and clearer display.

The screen is Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It is not as resistant as the Corning Gorilla Glass 6, but should still survive in your pocket with daily objects such as keys or coins. Beneath the screen of the phone, you will also find a punch hole style camera on the top left corner. On top of the screen lies the phone speaker.

On the right side of the phone, you will find the side-mounted fingerprint reader, which also acts the power button. On its right side, you will find the SIM card tray and the volume rockers for the phone. On the sim tray, you have two slots for your sim cards, as the phone is dual-sim, along with a dedicated microSD card slot.

OPPO A72 - 4GB/128G Android Smartphone with Google Apps - Twilight Black (UK Version)
  • Display: 6.5, 1080 x 2400 pixels
  • Processor: Snapdragon 665 2GHz
  • Camera: Quad, 48MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP
  • Battery: 5000 mAh

On the bottom of the phone is its charging port. The charging port is a USB-C 1.0 reversible connector. The charging port supports fast charging for the phone. On the left of the charging port, there is a microphone and a 3.5mm audio jack. On its left lie the stereo speakers.

The rear-side of the phone you will find four cameras and an LED flash bundled together. The primary camera is 48MP that comes with a wide lens. The second camera is 8MP for your ultrawide shots. The third and fourth cameras are depth detectors for mono and portrait photographs. You cannot use them as the device uses them internally to enhance your pictures.

You can get the phone in four colour variants, namely, Twilight Black, Stream White, Sky Blue, Aurora Purple. Overall, the phone has a plastic body, but due to its unique and bright colours, it has a premium glass look to it. However, the plastic exterior still makes your phone susceptible to scratches.

Technical

The Oppo A72 comes with a Snapdragon 665 processor, which should allow for smooth operations. The phone also boasts an Adreno 610 GPU. The GPU, combined with the processor, should let you play some demanding games such as PUBG or Asphalt 9 on low or medium settings.

The A72 has 128GB storage built-in. Unlike other phones, there are no alternative storage variants of the phone. However, 128GB should be more than enough for even some advanced users. As mentioned above, the phone also comes with a dedicated microSD card slot, which should allow you to increase the storage any time you want.

You can get the phone with either 4GB RAM or 8GB RAM. The 8GB RAM variant costs more than the 4GB one. Unless you do some serious multitasking on your phone, the 4GB RAM should suffice. However, if you can afford the extra cost, more RAM won’t hurt.

The Oppo A72 comes with ColorOS 7.1 preinstalled based on Android 10. ColorOS is Oppo’s customized OS on top of stock Android. The OS isn’t perfect and can sometimes cause random bugs.

With the primary camera on the A72, you can record 4K videos at 30fps and 1080p videos at 30fps or 120fps. The selfie camera also supports 1080P videos at 30fps. Overall, the camera experience on the A72 is average.

Finally, the 5000 mAH Li-Po battery on the A72 should be more than enough to meet your daily needs. With moderate usage, it can last you a full day. Likewise, it means that the phone will take longer to charge fully. However, with fast charging, that shouldn’t be an issue.

Performance

The Oppo A72 is an average device. You can’t expect any miracles from it at the given price point. However, it still gets the job done. The device can be buggy sometimes, but it is due to Oppo’s ColorOS. During our test, the device handled all the routine tasks gracefully. Furthermore, we noticed very little lag during our time with the device. Like all other Oppo low-range devices, you may experience some heating issues with the phone.

Overall, the OPPO A72 is a decent value and sturdy smartphone if you are looking at a phone for around £200.

If you are looking for more of a cheap throw-away smartphone for travelling then take a look at the Alcatel 1C which comes in at under £50!
