Design & Build Quality
The Huawei MateBook D15 2020 is a great looking laptop, and at first glance, you will notice that Huawei has taken the design hints from Apple’s MacBook series. Whether it is the chassis design or size of the touchpad, you will notice the striking similarities between both laptops. However, it is certainly not a bad thing considering the price of the MateBook D15.
The laptop comes with a grey aluminum body with the Huawei logo on the top. Other than that, it has the ports on the side of the laptop. The overall weight of the Huawei MateBook D15 2020 is 1.63 KG with SSD & HDD model, and the SSD model only weighs around 1.5 KG.
This laptop is also excellent in terms of build quality. It has a sturdy body with minimum flex. The flex on Display is also non-existent, which shows that the laptop is well-built.
Display
The Huawei MateBook D15 2020 comes with a very colour accurate Display. It comes with a 15.6-inch FHD LCD display that offers great colours and viewing angles. The Display also has very thin bezels with an edge-to-edge screen, which gives the laptop a modern look. The great thing about the Display of the MateBook D15 is that it comes with a matte finish, so it is not reflective, and you can use it outdoors.
Performance
When it comes to Performance, Huawei MateBook D15 2020 fully met our expectations. It comes with the AMD Ryzen 7 3700U CPU coupled with Radeon RX Vega 10 Graphics. This configuration is powerful enough to handle the most modern games at low to mid-tier settings depending on the game you are playing. As Huawei MateBook D15 2020 is not designed for gaming, do not expect outstanding performance, but it can handle modern games.
The laptop truly shines when it comes to everyday tasks. It can easily handle professional software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Premiere Pro without any problem. The laptop also has a great thermal performance as well. The MateBook D15 has an average temperature of 24 degrees centigrade under normal usage, and under heavy load, we got an average temperature of 45.6 degrees centigrade.
We also noticed that the laptop has great heat distribution, and the areas such as the touchpad and right bottom palm rest area do not get very hot compared to other areas. In the palm rest area, we got an average temperature of only 28.5 degrees centigrade, which is very low.
The overall performance of Huawei MateBook D15 2020 is exceptional for its price, and you should consider this laptop if you want a work-horse laptop with an elegant design. If you want a laptop specifically for gaming, then Huawei MateBook D15 2020 is not suitable.
Battery Performance
Huawei MateBook D15 2020 comes with a 42 WH battery, which is slightly smaller than most competitors, but still offers reasonable battery life. Under moderate usage, we achieved around 6 hours of battery life, which is acceptable. However, this reduces substantially when the laptop is placed under load. Under heavy load, we achieved an average battery life of only 1.5 hours.
The Laptop is supplied with a 65W power brick and USB-C cable which can recharge the Laptop from empty to 100% in around 1.5 hours, which somewhat makes up for the slightly low battery life we experienced during testing. When used as a desktop replacement device this issue is less of a problem.
